IEBC Legal Director Praxedes Tororey Hands In Early Retirement Notice

IEBC Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Praxedes Tororey Chepkoech, has given an early retirement notice just over a month to the repeat presidential election.

Ms. Tororey becomes the first top official of the besieged Commission to leave office following the Supreme Court nullified August 8 poll.

The former magistrate has worked as the electoral commission’s legal director since 2010. She was responsible for management of Dispute Resolution and Litigation arising from electoral processes.

She was also in charge of legal engagements with stakeholders including development partners, media, and Political Parties.

Praxedes Tororey was, however, earmarked by the opposition as one of the people who needs to leave the commission before they can agree to participate in the new polls.

National Super Alliance presidential leader, Raila Odinga, demanded that she, along with IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, his deputies; Betty Nyambuto and Marjan Hussein Marjan as well as Sidney Namulungu and Silas Rotich all resign or be fired.

None of the IEBC officers demanded to be let go by NASA have been fired.

IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati on Tuesday, however, ordered Chiloba to suspend ICT Director James Muhati, ICT Coordinator Paul Mugo and ICT officer Boniface Wamae for what he termed as failure short of assisting the commission to successfully discharge its mandate.

In a memo to CEO Ezra Chiloba, Chebukati said the decision was made to restore confidence in the IEBC ahead of the repeat presidential polls.

Chief Justice David Maraga ruled that there was a systemic institutional problem that contributed to the IEBC’s failure to transmit presidential poll results according to the law.

The Apex Court, however, was unable to find any specific individual culpable for any of the illegalities and technicalities committed during the electronic transmission of the presidential election results.
