Raila Odinga has joined the growing number of individuals in the country that have asked IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati to postpone elections slated for next Thursday.

Speaking to the media after a meeting with Chebukati at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi, the NASA leader said the current conditions do not show that credible elections could be held with the only direction now being to postpone elections.

“It is now clear that the condition in place cannot allow for a free and fair election,” said Mr. Odinga.

He then addredded the power sharing allegations, rubbishing it and terming it as “cheap propaganda”.

“That is cheap propaganda perpetrated by people who are drunk with power. I don’t need any of those poisoned Nusu Mkate’s from them,” he said.

Mr. Odinga said his decision to withdraw from the repeat presidential election was due to the state of unpreparedness at the electoral commission. He, however, indicated that if reforms requested by NASA are done, he would consider getting back into the race.

Raila’s sentiments comes amid reports of an ongoing rift within the electoral commission.

Chairman Chebukati has accused a section of his commissioners of a “coup” meant to undermine delivery of a credible election.

On Wednesday, the IEBC chair expressed his doubt citing partisan commissioners, meddling in the running of the electoral commission by the political class and the lack of a conducive environment to run an election following political tension from warring Jubilee and NASA factions.

Speaking after Raila, Musalia Mudavadi challenged the electoral body to come forward and reveal who was behind the excessive interference referred to in Chebukati’s statement as well as in Akombe’s resignation letter.

He insisted that Akombe and Chebukati are sending a very serious message to the country saying: “the environment is not conducive for an election.” He also urged the poll body to lay bare the implications of Commissioner Roselyn Akombe’s resignation.

The NASA principal further used the opportunity to criticise the police for disrupting opposition rallies with the most recent one having been in Laare, Meru County.
