Robbers Dig Tunnel To Access KCB Thika Branch, KSh 50 Million Stolen

KCB Robbery – As everyone was paying attention to the ongoing political situation in the country, some daring bank robbers carefully executed a plan to access a bank vault.

It was reported on Monday morning that robbers accessed Thika’s Kenya Commercial Bank branch over the weekend, making away with at least KSh 50 million.

The KCB branch manager, Samuel Ng’ang’a, said the robbers accessed the bank’s vault through an underground tunnel. Bank officials discovered the tunnel and missing money when they reported to work early this morning and opened the vault.

Mr. Ng’ang’a has since made a report to the police and to KCB’s head office.

In a statement, police said they received the information made by the bank manager.

“They broke into two safes… It is believed they used oxy-acytelene flames to drill holes into them,” police said.

Officers have not established when the bank robbers started digging the tunnel which according to them, breaks off at a nearby sewer line.

No arrest or recovery has been made in relation to the KCB robbery but police have launched investigations led by Thika OCPD Willy Simba and OCS Michael Paul Onyita.

OCS Onyita said they will give a comprehensive report after the anti-fraud unit completes the probe.

Unconfirmed speculation in the area says the police are looking for a tenant who recently rented a stall next to the bank.

A statement from KCB Bank confirmed that authorities have since launched an investigation to discover the people behind the robbery, with detectives currently at the bank and the crime scene secured.

It added that customers’ money was safe and there is no cause for alarm.

“There is no cause for alarm. Customers seeking to transact can do so at any other KCB branch or access services through our mobile and Internet banking platforms,” read the statement in part.
