Lupita Nyong’o: Kisumu’s Very Own Hollywood Royalty Thanks Residents For Dad’s Victory

Multi award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has thanked Kisumu residents for electing her father, Anyang’ Nyong’o, as Kisumu Governor.

The former Senator defeated Governor Jack Ranguma in the August 8 general election. He was among the number of governors who were inaugurated on Monday in their various Counties.

In a message via her Facebook page before her father was sworn in, the actress who was unable to attend the event wrote:

“Today is the day my father gets sworn in as the Governor of Kisumu County in Kenya. I thank all those who voted for him and wish him the very best as he embarks on this new journey of socio-political representation.”

Lupita went on to recollect 10 life lessons her father gave her over the years before wishing him the best on his new journey of service to the people.

Among the life lessons her father taught her was; how to love, how to be confident, how to be respectful, to have self-belief among many other things.

Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o alongside Deputy Governor Mathews Owili took the oath of office in the absence of outgoing Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma.

Outgoing Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga handed over the instruments of power to Nyong’o on behalf of her boss, who said he skipped the event because the results from the election were questionable.

Hundreds of residents graced the swearing-in ceremony at Kenyatta Sports Ground which was presided over by Justice Dorah Chepkwony.

Other County leaders at the ceremony include Kisumu Senator-elect Fred Outa, acting county secretary Ojwang Lusi, county commissioner Mohamed Maalim, Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor, Kisumu Central MP Fred Ouda and Kisumu woman representative-elect Rosa Buyu.

Nyong’o was with his wife Dorothy and a few family members.

Nyong’o promised to steer development in the county and to also improve the county’s economy by creating a friendly environment for investments. He said he was committed to working with the county assembly to enact laws that would speed up development and improve residents’ welfare.

Nyong’o also pledged to ensure public participation in county governance and would push for compensation for victims of police brutality during post-election demonstrations.

The swearing-in ceremony was marred with a little chaos as county commissioner Mohammed Maalim was booed off the stage.

Inauguration attendees who were angered by alleged police brutality during post-election demonstrations hurled objects at him as he read Kiunjuri’s speech.

Maalim led the county security team that absolved police from the alleged brutality.
