United States Issues Travel Alert Warning To Citizens Traveling To Kenya

The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel alert warning of possible post election violence following the repeat presidential election.

The repeat presidential election is set for October 17 and will be between President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga, who according to the United States, both command a huge following.

“Rallies, demonstrations, and protests may occur with little notice,” said the department in an alert issued on September 13.

The alert warned U.S. citizens to avoid visiting six counties; Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu and parts of Kilifi county.

“You should avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.”

“Although there is no indication that US citizens may be targets of violence, you are urged to exercise caution and remain abreast of the security situation throughout the electoral period,” it added.

The travel alert warning further noted that as with all major events, there is the opportunity for “criminal elements or terrorists” to target participants and visitors.

“Even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.”

It urged American vacation goers to monitor media and local information sources regarding election-related developments.

This is not the first time the United States has issued travel alert warning to its citizens already in or plaing to travel to Kenya.

With the constant threat of Al-Shabaab from Somalia, the U.S. has constantly warned of a potential attack specifically in the more populated and tourist-attracted areas.

In July last year, the US Embassy recommended that U.S. citizens in Mombasa should visit the Old Town only during daylight hours, and avoid using the Likoni ferry due to safety concerns.

In an advisory signed in January this year, the department warned its citizens to be on high alert over potential attacks and high risk of crime throughout the country.
