End Of The World: Conspiracy Theorists Peg September 23 As Rapture Date

Several conspiracy theorists have claimed, with the backing of scientific calculations, that the end of the world is on Saturday, September 23.

They say the rapture as described in the New Testament’s Book of Revelation will occur on that day.

This will see Christians who are deemed ‘worthy’ called to heaven where they will spend eternity while those left on earth will face seven gruesome years before the world is completely destroyed.

These claims, propagated by American William Tapley and other conspiracy theorists, are based on an apocalyptic theory known as Revelation 12 Sign theory which predicts the end of the world is coming this month.

They point to scripture that states ‘a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.’

They believe this is referring to constellations Leo (crown) and Virgo (woman) aligning on September 23, with the sun then passing through them – fulfilling the ‘clothed with the sun’ strand.

According to the conspiracy theorists, this will take place in two parts, with a seven-year period of tribulation in between. During this time, the Antichrist will bring destruction upon Mankind.

The theory is also loosely based on actual biblical scriptures like 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 and 2 Peter 3:10 but the wider Christian community, however, rejects them.

Kenyan Christian leaders such as Reverend Tom Otieno, the senior minister at ACK Lavington United Church, told churchgoers not to listen to such speculation.

“In Acts chapter 1 verse six and seven, Jesus said it is not up to us to know the times and seasons God has set. Jesus discouraged this kind of speculation. He told Christians to remain pure and evangelize, that is enough,” he said.

Otieno added that the Bible says Jesus would come at a time no one knows.

This was supported by Peter Mubea of PCEA Kitengela church who added that such conspiracies are false and are definitely not supported by the Bible.
