NASA Anti-IEBC Demonstrations: Government Warns That Opposition Will Be Held Liable For Destruction Of Property

The stage is set for the NASA anti-IEBC demonstrations scheduled today by the opposition leader and his co-principals.

NASA had on Sunday given IEBC officials including CEO, Ezra Chiloba, who among others, it accuses of mismanaging the August 8 presidential elections, an ultimatum to vacate office before Tuesday failure to which massive protests will be held.

NASA co-principal Moses Wetangula yesterday confirmed supporters will take to the streets today to push for electoral reforms.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has given a go-ahead to the NASA anti-IEBC demonstrations. He, however, warned his opponent that he will be held responsible for any destruction of property. He said any acts of violence will be met with the full force of the law.

Speaking at a rally in Tharaka Nithi County on Monday, President Kenyatta said:

“People are free to demonstrate but they must ensure that they do not destroy other people’s property. Kenyans should open their businesses as usual and let them not think that they will break into other people’s shops and interfere with the daily routine of other Kenyans.”

The president’s Idea were echoed by Police commander Japhet Koome who added that NASA has not formally notified police of plans to demonstrate.

Security is expected to tight around the IEBC’s Aiversary Towers headquarters. The building will be locked, cordoned off and protesters will not be allowed to get close.

Tens of anti-riot police have also been mobilized ahead of today’s plaed demonstrations. The officers have been stationed at various police stations waiting for action.

If and when the protest is deemed illegal, there could be an ugly confrontation as the officers have been ordered to disperse protesters. Jubilee supporters have also plaed counter-demonstrations.
