Budalang’i Sigiri Bridge: KSh 1.2 Billion Project Collapses Days After Uhuru Inspects It

The Budalang’i Sigiri bridge which is still under construction has collapsed.

The KSh 1.2 billion Jubilee’s flagship project in Busia County collapsed on Monday, 26 June 2017, a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta inspected it. The bridge links Bunyala South and North.

A number of Masons were injured from the collapse of the bridge with no casualties so far reported. Those injured in the have been rushed the to the hospital.

During the Presidents tour of the County, he hailed the project saying it will ease movement of people to schools and markets in the area. While commissioning it, he spoke about the numerous boat tragedies which have occurred on the river.

Plans to construct the bridge came about as a result of the death of nine people who died on a boat while attempting to cross River Nzoia using a canoe.

According to Uhuru’s Twitter account, the Budalang’i Sigiri bridge is fully sponsored by the national government and was to be completed by the end of this month.

“This bridge will significantly reduce deaths and make it easier for the residents to access markets, schools, and hospitals.”

“It is constructed by my government at a cost of KSh 1 billion and will be completed by mid-July,” said the tweet.

Uhuru had ordered the deployment of Kenya Marine Agency officers to work alongside the Busia government to ensure the safety of more than 1,000 people crossing the bridge every day.
