President Uhuru Kenyatta Declares Sunday National Prayer Day

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday declared Sunday, October 22, 2017, as a National Prayer Day for Kenyans.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi after a meeting with religious leaders, Uhuru acknowledged that Kenya is going through trying times and is in need of peace, reconciliation, and guidance.

“After consultations with religious leaders, I have reached this decision to call on all Kenyans to pray for their country which will culminate to a National Day of Prayer this Sunday,” said Mr. Kenyatta.

Uhuru noted that the prayers will solve the stalemate featuring him and NASA chief Raila Odinga.

“We must thank God for the journey so far and while at it, ask him to abide with us in this period because we caot let politics destroy the country.”

The president further asked Kenyans to pray for each other and forgive one another saying that God has lifted this country before.

“Let us pray for all our leaders across the political divide. That they are granted wisdom, humility and that they may love peace and justice.”

“The truth is that the politics of the day are fleeting but this nation under God’s care will endure,” he added.

The President called on religious leaders to lead the exercise to ensure Kenyans remain united as preparations for the repeat October 26 presidential election are made.

Uhuru’s call for a National Prayer Day comes as the IEBC has been thrown into turmoil following the unforeseen resignation and damning revelation made by one of its commissioners, Roselyn Akombe.

Dr. Akombe earlier today aounced her resignation from the electoral body saying the commission “in its current state can surely not guarantee a credible election on 26 October 2017.”

She called for a postponement of the polls because some staff members are getting last minute instructions on changes in technology and electronic transmission of results. She also said the commissioners were partisan in operations.
