Everton Sack Manager Ronald Koeman Following Abysmal Start To Season

Everton have sacked manager Ronald Koeman following an abysmal start to the season that has left the club in the Premier League relegation zone.

The Merseyside club are 18th on the Premier League standings, having registered just two wins in their nine league games this season.

The club took to Twitter to post a statement confirming the departure saying:

“Everton Football Club can confirm that Ronald Koeman has left the Club.”

“Chairman Bill Kenwright, the Board of Directors and Major Shareholder Farhad Moshiri would all like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the Club over the past 16 months and for guiding the Club to seventh place in last season’s Premier League campaign.”

The 54-year-old Dutch manager’s final game was a 5-2 home defeat by Arsenal on Sunday. Speaking to the media after the game, Koeman said he was confident he could turn things around.

“The team is underperforming, it is in a difficult situation mentally and struggling for confidence. That is what we need to change,” he said.

“I still believe I can change the whole situation, but everybody knows how it works in football. That is all I answer about this situation.”

“The final result is really poor, but all these kind of decisions (about the future) are not in my hands.”

Everton spent £140 million in the summer following the club’s seventh position finish last campaign.

Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Sandro Ramirez, Nikola Vlasic, Davy Klaassen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, and Wayne Rooney were all brought in to help build a team that could challenge the Premier League top six.

They, however, lost and failed to adequately replace their top goalscorer, Romelu Lukaku, who joined Manchester United.

Lukaku has now scored seven goals for his new team, the same number as the whole of the Everton squad.

The manager also seemed unable to settle on his best team and best formation as he kept on changing things.

Ronald Koeman is the third managerial casualty of the 2017/2018 Premier League season. He joins compatriot Frank de Boer who was sacked by Crystal Palace and Leicester’s Craig Shakespeare.
