Police Shoot Two Protesters In Migori For Blocking Electoral Materials

Police in Migori today shot two protesters who blocked the roads to IEBC offices in the County to prevent the delivery of electoral materials.

The protesters had barricaded roads to the town with stones and bonfires to prevent IEBC vehicles from distributing materials for Thursday’s repeat presidential poll.

“We are not going to allow voting in the election and people carrying IDs tomorrow will be dealt with,” said one unidentified protester.

One of the protesters had a bullet graze him on the leg with the bullet grazing the second person on the side of his head. They were both rushed to Oruba Nursing Hospital and Migori Referral Hospital respectively for treatment.

With Wednesday being declared a public holiday, there was no activity around town as businesses shut down in preparation for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in Malindi and Kajiado, IEBC officials have aounced their readiness to conduct Thursday’s repeat presidential election.

The officials say they have taken all necessary measures and are ready to open polling stations.

Malindi returning officer Masha Mwakudonda said they have also put in place plans for distribution of electoral materials to the 154 stations. He added sufficient measures have been taken to ensure security at all voting centers.

“There were safety fears among vehicle owners but the matter was resolved. We expect all ballot papers to be at polling stations by 7pm today. We have no challenge of getting poll clerks and other officials.”

Mwakudonda further said they have identified the hotspots where additional security will be deployed.

In Kajiado, IEBC officials signed their contracts on Wednesday and area coordinator Saadi Noor said all electoral materials from Nairobi were received in good time.

Noor said there are no reported incidents that can hinder the process in the county.

“We are set. Clerks and returning officers in all the five sub-counties have signed their contracts.”

Acting county commissioner David Kipkemei said they have deployed enough officers to all centers across the county.
