My VXP chael strip's output cuts out / goes to sleep randomly, anyone know a fix to this (common?) problem?

I have two VXP chael strips with the same / similar problem. They will randomly and briefly quit delivering output when the input signal gets quiet or falls below a certain level. One unit seems to respond to a loud input that will bring it back to life. The other unit just drops out when the input goes quiet and comes back with a distorted "click" sound when the mic gets another impulse. The problem occurs regardless of the compressor being switched in or out.
