CS Matiang’i Gives Security Assurance During Repeat Elections

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, has assured Kenyans of safety during the repeat elections saying that security forces have been sufficiently deployed.

Dr. Matiang’i made this known to reporters after casting his vote at Manga Girls High School in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County.

He further urged Kenyans to come out and exercise their right to vote as he also said that those boycotting the election should stay away and not cause chaos.

“I don’t anticipate any problem in as far as security is concerned. We have sufficient deployment of security throughout the country,” said Matiang’i.

“If you don’t choose to vote, it’s okay, it’s your right. But stay away from polling stations and stay at home,” he added.

Voting began at 6:00 am across the country although reports have emerged that some polling stations are yet to open with voters and electoral officials failing to show up for fear of their lives.

A number of high profile politicians have cast their votes in the repeat elections including Deputy President William Ruto.

He cast his vote in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu County, where he appealed to those not participating in the repeat presidential election not to interfere with those casting their ballot.

“It is unfortunate that some of us may not have the freedom to choose their leaders because of the will of others who do not wish their supporters to vote,” said Ruto.

“You can choose to think for yourself or choose someone else to think for you… It simply demonstrates everybody can choose what they want and that is democracy.”

Ruto went on to emphasize the need to respect public institutions like the IEBC and the judiciary.

“In our opinion, we had won the August 8th election but because of the respect for our institutions, we chose to do it again and that is why we are here. Kenya is a democracy anchored on the rule of law,” he added.

“This is yet another moment to be proud of our country. Those that will vote and those who will not, we remain one country” concluded Ruto.
