Jens Lehma Returns To Arsenal As Another Ex-Arsenal And Germany Star Heads To Japan

Arsenal great Jens Lehma is set for a shock return back to the club where he previously had two spells.

The 47-year-old will re-join the north London club again as a goalkeeping coach. He will be working alongside longtime Arsenal goalkeeping coach, Gerry Peyton, who has been at the club since 2003.

Lehma’s role will include overseeing the displays of Petr Cech, David Ospina and Emiliano Martinez. He is also expected to play an advisory role to Arsene Wenger by augmenting the coaching staff in a general role with the first team.

The former Germany international joined Arsenal in the summer of 2003 from Borussia Dortmund. He made 200 first-team appearances for Arsenal and was a member of the Invincibles; Arsenal’s unbeaten team in the 2003-04 season, when they last won the Premier League title.

At the end of the 2007-08 season, Jens Lehma left Arsenal but returned in 2011 as a cover for Arsenal’s injured goalkeepers. He made one appearance for the club during that three-month spell.

Lehma’s addition to Wenger’s backroom staff is the latest move by the long time manager in a shake-up that is meant to return Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League. They had previously recently added Australian fitness expert, Darren Burgess as director of high performance.

In other related news, former Arsenal and Germany international, Lukas Podolski has joined Japanese side, Vissel Kobe.

Podolski took to Instagram to aounce his new club located in the south of Japan following his unveiling. He captioned the photo: “The begiing of my next chapter.”

The striker spent three years at Arsenal before moving to Istanbul to play for Turkish giants Galatasaray in 2015. He has also been on the books at FC Koln (twice), Bayern Munich and Inter on loan. For Germany, Podolski made 130 appearances, scoring 49 goals.

His honors include a league and cup double with Bayern in 2008, an FA Cup in 2014 with Arsenal and a World Cup in 2014.
