how to bypass the preamp on 1818VSL ? and should I turn the gain all the way to -20 ? or keep it on middle as 0 ?

how to bypass the preamp on 1818VSL ? and should I tu the gain all the way to -20 ? or keep it on middle as 0 ?

Note that I'm using the 1/4inch TRS cable on Line input ..
