Pogba In Mecca – The world’s most expensive footballer shared a photo of his pilgrimage to Islam’s holiest city marking the start of Ramadan.

The 24-year-old who cost Manchester United a reported £89m ($114m) fee to become the most expensive footballer in history, shared a picture of himself in Mecca on Sunday, captioning it the “most beautiful thing I’ve seen in my life”. He also sent out a tweet wishing everyone a “Happy Ramadan”.

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims. It started on Friday evening. Muslims believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran, to Mohammed.

During the entire month of Ramadan, most of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline — meditation with God, extra prayer, increased charity and generosity, and intense study of the Quran.

At the end of Ramadan, there is a big three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr, – the breaking of the fast festival. It is like the Muslim version of Christmas, in the sense that it’s a religious holiday where families and friends come together for big meals and exchange presents with each other.

Paul Pogba, who lifted the Europa League cup after Manchester United beat Ajax in the final in Stockholm on Wednesday, shared a short video of himself with a suitcase, saying he was “en route” for his prayers. He was attending Umrah, a non-mandatory Muslim pilgrimage.

Pogba in Mecca for Ramadan is reportedly not the first time he has visited the believed birthplace of Prophet Muhammad. He is reported to have visited Mecca at least once before when he performed the Hajj, a journey every healthy adult Muslim who can afford it is supposed to make at least once in their lives.
