Al Shabaab Terrorist Attack Mokowe GSU Camp Hours After President’s Lamu Visit

Al Shabaab terrorists are stepping up their attacks in Lamu after they attacked the Mokowe GSU camp on Tuesday.

The incident took place just hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed rallies in Kizingitini in Lamu East and Mpeketoni in Lamu West.

During those rallies, the President ordered the police to eliminate all terrorists, declaring a war against the terror group.

Officers in the Mokowe GSU camp overpowered the heavily armed terrorists, forcing them to flee into Mpeketoni forest.

One officer who asks to remain anonymous said the terrorists approached the camp in two groups at around 1 am.

“At around 1 am, we saw two groups of people approaching our camp. We asked them to identify themselves but they refused.”

“That’s when we decided to fire at them. They also started firing back. The fire exchange lasted for about 20 minutes before we overpowered them.”

“They disappeared into the bushes,” the officer narrated. There were also no casualties despite the exchange of fire that ensued.

The Star quotes a local who says he could hear the heavy gunfire from the camp.

“I was in my house but I could clearly hear what was going on from where I was. The gunshots lasted for over 30 minutes,” Mohamed Omar of Mokowe said.

Officers in Milihoi, about 40 kilometers from Mokowe were put on alert by their counterparts who saw off the attack.

This incident comes a day after Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa made allegations about Lamu opposition politicians funding the terrorist group.

It also comes barely a week after more than five people, including Public Works PS Mariam El Maawy were abducted by the militants.

El Maawy was shot and injured during the attack that also left her nephew, a trainee pilot Arif Kassim Athman dead.

The PS was later rescued by KDF and is admitted to hospital.
