McCain underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor along with a blood clot after doctors discovered the blood clot during a routine physical exam last week. The former Navy pilot has scheduled exams every four months for skin checks due to his history of skin cancer.
Lab results from that surgery, however, confirmed the presence of brain cancer associated with the blood clot.
Following a successful surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix last Friday, the 80-year-old is said to be recovering “amazingly well” at home in Arizona.
Senator John McCain’s doctors in a statement said:
“The senator and his family are reviewing further treatment options with his Mayo Clinic care team. Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.”
The lawmaker’s daughter, Meghan McCain, said the family was shocked by the diagnosis. In the series of tweets, Meghan said her father was the “most confident and calm” of them all as he prepares to take on the disease.
Since the news of his illness broke, John McCain has received a wide range of support from the public including President Trump and former President, Barack Obama, who beat him in the 2008 presidential elections.
