Headmistress To Be Charged With Murder After Six-Year-Old Pupil Gets Crushed To Death By School Bus

The death of one of the pupils at St Augustine’s Preparatory School in Mombasa has led to a murder charge for the headmistress.

Six-year-old pupil, Jeremy Masila was crushed to death by the school bus after he fell through an opening on the School Bus floor.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions through Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Alexander Muteti, has ordered the arrest of the school’s headmistress, Serah Kessi.

He also asked for her to be charged with murder.

Muteti’s directive follows a recommendation by the National Transport Authority who said the school administrators should be taken to court after its preliminary investigations revealed that the school tried to cover the School Bus floor with a carpet having previously discovered the hole.

In a letter written on Saturday, Mr. Muteti directed the Mombasa criminal investigations office to appoint a senior officer to lead investigations into the incident that occurred on 6:30 am on Friday.

“We have reviewed the investigation file in respect of the fatal accident of the child,” said the letter in part.

“This is not a matter that should be approached purely from a traffic accident angle and therefore the need to have a seasoned detective to deal with the same.”

“We have directed the immediate arrest of the school principal, the bursar, bus driver, the school mechanic and the bus driver’s helper who was on board.”

Muteti urged the police to bring in everybody responsible so that they could be taken to court Monday to face their charges.

The letter also indicated that two other prosecutors will assist the investigations team to ensure that the matter is concluded without delay.

The school bus will now be impounded, inspected and photographed as officers build their case.

“The safety of school going children is a matter of great public interest and calls for immediate and thorough investigations into the matter to unearth the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident.”
