Females and youth were not allowed to access the sacred venue where the prayers were held located beside a river.
The elders spent the whole night performing the rituals and praying for a peaceful election before slaughtering a bull in the break of dawn. They feasted on the meat which was placed on leaves after it was roasted.
One of the elders, Yaralima Chesira, said:
“Those who will ascend to power by election rigging will die before December. They will die a month after they are sworn in.”
“We have pleased our gods by slaughtering a bull and I hope our prayers will be answered.”
Another elder, Christopher Loritakau, said:
“We decided to hold the prayers to secure the country from chaos judging from what we witnessed in the last election. There should be peace in our county and across the country.”
Nasukuta, which has been marked as a hot spot for possible violence, is the sacred place of the Pokot community. Locals believe that rituals performed at the venue will be fulfilled.
