
The National Police Service has aounced a salary increment for officers in all ranks begiing at the end of July.
This means from next week, a Constable who is the lowest paid officer with a salary of KSh17,800 will get a 19 percent salary hike, that is an additional KSh3,400.

National Police Service Commission chairman Johnstone Kavuludi and inspector general of police Joseph Boiet made the aouncement in a joint statement on Friday.
They said those in a higher cadre will receive a six percent increase in their pay.
“Those in the rank of senior assistant inspector general will be awarded a six percent salary rise,” said Kavuludi.
“Detailed salary adjustments in each rank converted to Kenyan shillings shall be issued by the IG Joseph Boiet.”
Kavuludi said that the new salary structure was arrived at after they had consulted widely in Government and in agreement with the Salaries Remuneration Commission.
He then added that consultations on the award of a comprehensively revised pay structure for all uniformed officers was still ongoing and will be made public in due course.
The aouncement drew mixed reactions from junior officers with most of them terming calling it a slap in their face. They say it an insult compared to what they expected and the job they do.
The bulk of police officers are constables while there are less than 10 senior assistant inspectors general.

The National Police Service has 12 job groups — from PG1 to PG12 while the civil service has 19 pay scales.
Constables, the lowest-ranked officers, are on scale PG1 while PG 12 caters for officers of the rank of senior assistant inspector general.
Currently, the salaries vary depending on one’s year of experience in a particular rank. Apart from the basic salaries, the officers’ allowances also vary.
A police officer recruited at the constable level – with only a high school certificate – earns a basic salary of KSh17,000. The pay is increased to at least KSh36,000 after an officer acquires a degree.
