How do you sub divide the note value of the time signature on the metronome?

For Example: In standard 4/4 time, there are four 1/4 note beats in a bar.

In 4/4 time, how do change it to play

1/8 notes = 8 beats/bar

1/16 notes = 16 beats /bar

and so on???
