U.S., China Among World Leaders Congratulating Uhuru On Re-Election

World leaders including powerhouses U.S. and China have sent congratulatory messages to President Uhuru Kenyatta following his re-election.

The White House in a statement congratulated Uhuru and commended Kenyans for successfully concluding their elections and upholding peace throughout the electioneering period.

“We commend the dedication of candidates, officials, and the public to upholding a peaceful, fair, and transparent contest, and we welcome the statements by international and domestic observer missions affirming the credibility of the election,” read the statement.

The statement went on to express concern about the rising tensions in parts of the country. It recommended that the rule of law be followed by those aggrieved.

“We are troubled by reports that some demonstrations have turned violent, and call on all Kenyans to reject violence and resolve disputes in accordance with the Kenyan Constitution and the rule of law.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated the Kenyan leader, adding that he was ready to continue working with him to enhance relations between the two countries.

“During your participation in the Road and Belt Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing last May, we had an in depth exchange of views on the development of bilateral relations and reached extensive consensus.”

“I attach high importance to China-Kenya relations and I am ready to work with Your Excellency to enhance the China-Kenya comprehensive strategic cooperation relationship and further benefit our two countries and our people.”

The European Union Vice President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini also congratulated the Head of State.

The EU praised the election terming it as credible, free, fair and transparent. It reiterated its commitment to continuing its support for Kenya’s development.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his congratulatory message to Uhuru urged the political class to preach peace to their supporters in other to avoid violent protests.

In a statement delivered by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary-General said he took note of the results of the presidential election in Kenya which led to the aouncement of His Excellency Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta as President-elect by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

He called on the political leaders disputing the elections results to address their grievances through the relevant constitutionally mandated institutions.

“The Secretary-General calls on the political leaders to send clear messages to their supporters urging them to refrain from violence. The Secretary-General also stresses the importance of dialogue to defuse tensions,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also called Uhuru Kenyatta to felicitate with him. He pledged to continue cooperation with Israel in the areas of agriculture and security.
