Nairobi Governor-Elect Mike Sonko Demands All Activities At City Hall Stopped

Nairobi Governor-elect, Mike Mbuvi Sonko is demanding that all activities at City Hall be stopped until he assumes office.

In a letter addressed to outgoing Governor, Dr. Evans Kidero, Sonko said that it is necessary to ensure a smooth transition of the reins of power in the County. By this action, he aims to stem financial hemorrhage, forestall the collapse of services and to maintain accurate and proper records of the county government.

The demands made by Sonko includes Kidero not withdrawing any funds from the City County account with the Central Bank of Kenya. He wants Kidero not to remove any materials from City Hall or any other Nairobi County Office items.

Further, the Nairobi Governor-elect wants Kidero not to enter into any contract with any third-party committing the Nairobi County resources in any maer effective August 8, 2017.

He wants by close of business today (August 15), Kidero to appoint a transition committee constituting of three members and that he is also allowed to appoint three similar members to help in the transition process.

Sonko, in the letter, threatened to file a law suit if his demands are not met by the outgoing administration.

“Please liaise with us in the meeting of the foregoing objectives to enable us secure the best interests of the residents of the Nairobi City County and note further that our client has instructed that in default of your responses by the close of business August 15, 2017, we have instructions to seek legal redress,” reads the letter.

The Jubilee soon-to-be sworn in Governor has been up and about preparing for his new role as Nairobi County boss.

He beat incumbent Governor Evans Kidero with 53.6 percent of the votes – 848,712 votes to Kidero’s 42.76 percent – 677,083 votes.

He has, however, won more hearts of the wananchi after he rejected a proposal by the county assumption of office committee to set aside KSh 25 million for his inauguration ceremony.

The assumption of office committee in its proposal had allocated Ksh 11.1 million for public health, Ksh 6.3 million for security, Ksh 2.4 million to fuel VIP cars, Ksh 2.7 million for works and Ksh 2 million for documentation.

Sonko instead directed the cash to be used to settle the one-month arrears owed to the county staff.

The move will boost Sonko’s accountability record as county boss with Nairobi, in the previous tenure, being rocked with numerous corruption scandals.
