City Hall Nairobi Activities Put On Stand Still Until Sonko Assumes Office

All the functions of City Hall Nairobi that would require the approval of the county executive committee have been suspended. This is according to a memo sent to all county Chief Officers and directors.

The declaration follows a letter written on Tuesday, August 15, by Nairobi Governor-elect, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, through his lawyers to the transition committee demanding the halt of all transactions by the City County Government of Nairobi.

Sonko asked outgoing Governor, Dr. Evans Kidero, not to withdraw any funds from the City County account with the Central Bank of Kenya and to also not remove any materials from City Hall or any other Nairobi County Office.

This was initiated to stop any fraudulent deals that officers of the previous regime may want to execute illegally.

The functions of the county executive committee include the awarding and execution of contracts, leases, assignments, and the processing of payments.

Activities of the county executive committee will, however, continue when a new county government has been sworn in on Monday, August 21.

On the environment, the Nairobi Governor-elect is not waiting till he takes the oath of office to be City Hall Nairobi boss to start work.

Sonko, who has promised to transform Nairobi to the cleanest city in Africa, has embarked on the mission.

He has deployed hundreds of youth attached to his Sonko Rescue Team to remove campaign posters and other related materials from walls and streets.

The Sonko Rescue Team workers also cleared trash around the city as well as garbage heaps in the environs.

Nairobians have welcomed their new county boss’ proactiveness with many lauding the Jubilee Party member’s move. Others have, however, expressed concern as to why a private firm linked to the governor-elect was used to do the clean up instead of the city’s county workers.
