Wayne Rooney: England Captain Aounces Immediate Retirement From International Football

England captain and all-time leading scorer Wayne Rooney has aounced his immediate retirement from international football.

The Everton striker did so following a meeting with England boss Gareth Southgate where he rejected a call-up for next month’s matches against Malta and Slovakia.

Rooney was left out from Southgate’s last squad for the summer fixtures against Scotland and France in June.

His good start to life back at his childhood club, however, put him back in contention with him not just being the team’s captain and highest goal scorer, but the outfield player with the most caps for England.

The 31-year-old Rooney featured 119 times over 14 years for his country and has scored 53 goals. Only former goalkeeper Peter Shilton has had more caps for England with 125.

In his statement to the press, Wayne Rooney thanked Southgate for wanting him back in the squad. He said it was at that moment when he was notified that he informed the England boss of his decision to call it a day with the Three Lions.

“It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me. Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out,” he said.

“Leaving Manchester United was a tough call but I know I made the right decision in coming home to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful.”

“I will always remain a passionate England fan. One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side.

He ended his statement by saying he hoped the current crop of players and manager achieve huge success. And that he looks forward to celebrating with them as a fan or in any capacity.

Rooney’s last international appearance was as captain in last November’s 3-0 victory over Scotland at Wembley.
