Police Officer Shoots Jubilee Party Kiambu Politician Dead

A police officer was on Sunday morning arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a Jubilee Party Kiambu politician.

The Kiambu politician, identified as William Mwangi, was shot dead inside his car in Limuru town at dawn on Saturday after meeting friends at a bar.

According to reports, the accused police officer, Constable Edward Manjalu, who was recently transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation headquarters from the Flying Squad unit at Tigoni police station, had confronted the Jubilee Party Kiambu politician and his friends while they were drinking after watching football matches.

The bar’s management confirmed that the officer took a bottle of beer bought by the group without their consent. That led to an argument which led to a fist fight, leaving the officer with a face injury.

The bar’s security broke up the fight and threw the officer out of the establishment to restore calmness.

“The problem started when the gentleman demanded to take one of the bottles of beer we had bought but we asked him to pay for it,” said one of Mr. Mwangi’s friends who asked to remain anonymous.

“He asked us if we knew who he was but we told him we are a free country guarded by law. We didn’t know he was an officer.”

The drama did not end there as Mr. Mwangi was accosted by the officer who was in the company of unknown people while he was leaving the bar.

Following a brief exchange of words, Constable Manjalu fired his weapon twice, killing Mr. Mwangi as he entered his car.

Detectives say Mwangi was shot at close range with one bullet to the head and another to the hand.

Limuru Directorate of Criminal Investigations officer Mwenda Itheiba confirmed the incident. He said the officer has been arrested and is being detained at Tigoni police station to help with investigations.

William Mwangi was a building and construction engineer. He lost the Jubilee Party primaries for the Lari Kirenga ward representative race.
