Seven Nairobi County Employees Arraigned Over Cash Found In Office

Seven Nairobi County employees have been arraigned in court over the huge amount of cash found in their offices by Gov. Mike Sonko.

They have been charged with being in possession of KSh 7,803,876 which was supposed to have been deposited by or before the close of the day on August 22.

Reuben Gachukia, Luke Gatimu, Maurice Ochieng, Nixon Awuor, Shaban Asman, Bedan Wambui and Chrispin Oyiro are the employees charged. They occupy the positions of chief cashier, finance officer, head of treasury head of revenue, in-charge of bank reconciliations and assistant cashier respectively.

In an affidavit by investigating officer Moses Gituathi, the seven Nairobi County employees who were arraigned before Resident Magistrate Sinkian Tobiko are being accused of conspiring to steal from the Nairobi County government of Nairobi.

‘’The investigating team is yet to recover revenue collection books, banking record books, banking slips and computers from the respondents of which are vital evidence in the case,” argued Gituathi.

He went on to apply to have the seven detained for five days to enable the police to conclude investigations.

Governor Mike Sonko has, meanwhile, said the county owes current and former employees close to KSh18 billion in unpaid statutory deduction.

This was after a union complained of delays in paying salaries, deprived promotions, unremitted statutory deductions, dilapidated uniforms, a hostile administration among others.

Speaking to the Nairobi City County Workers Union, Sonko said the issue has caused untold suffering especially for Nairobi workers as well as retirees.

He promised that his administration will make sure that the suffering of the workers is addressed.

“A comprehensive human resource audit shall be undertaken in Nairobi county to fast track promotions and salary reviews,” said Sonko.

“I shall ensure timely payment of salaries and implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement they have been striving to get implemented,” he promised.
